I figured I might as well start this blog off with what I intend it to be about.
Clay. And dogs. (such is my life)
This project was inspired by North Mississippi Great Dane Rescue (they have a blog called "Trista's Tails"-http://www.northmissgreatdanes.blogspot.com/)
They take in neglected, abused, and otherwise unwanted great danes. I don't have a great dane, and my only sincere affiliation with the rescue is that my best friend adopted from them and pretty much ensured that I too will adopt a special needs (preferably deaf) great dane one day in the future... and until then, I'll continue to help in a manner that is realistic for my current situation.
So these pins/sculptures/etc. will be for sale (or auction/raffle?) soon through that rescue.. in hopes of alleviating some of the financial burden that comes from taking in puppy mill/special needs dogs.
It's small in the scheme of things, but...
first things first. you have to mix your colors..
this is for a fawn dane.
I made the paws first.. easy enough
and start to blend the colors for the ears.. and shape them
the ears are why danes are one of my favorite animals to make.. that, and their snouts.
They are SO big, and stereotypical, it's like making a cartoon.
resembling Marmaduke already, no?
now that the eyes are added it looks a little less vacant..
Sorry I didn't capture the eyes before the were put into the face. (slipped my mind)
The eye is usually four layers.
white (cornea/sclera)
brown (or whatever other color you intend the iris to be)
black (pupil)
and white again (for that little life-like twinkle)
I also skipped the step of attaching the pin piece, but.. just note, it's a pin.
and ta da!
you've got yourself a great dane.
(or five)
the others were a more basic style and I didn't take pictures of the step-by-step details.. but maybe I will when I make more in the (near?) future..
I'll try to be better about that from now on...
These girls are the biggest reason I have to wait for a dane (and they're totally worth it)
Pyxie is in pink- she's my "old lady" princess dog..
Nova is my special needs love, & definitely a dog after my own heart.
and MeiXing ("mazing" ~beautiful star in chinese) is my sweetheart.
